Chatwise is built so that as little of your data as possible ever leaves your device — and anything that does is there because you asked for it. This page explains exactly what happens with your data.
Chatwise stores your chats, flashcard decks, review history, test results, and course content locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. If you're signed into iCloud, this data syncs privately across your own devices via your personal iCloud account (CloudKit). Chatwise's developer cannot see this data — it is stored in your iCloud account, not on a Chatwise server.
When you use Apple's on-device models or Apple Intelligence, your prompts are processed within Apple's privacy boundary as described in Apple's own privacy documentation. Chatwise does not see or store this traffic separately.
Chatwise also supports OpenAI-compatible APIs and providers such as OpenRouter. If you choose to use one, you supply your own API key, and your prompts are sent directly from your device to that provider over HTTPS — never through a Chatwise server. Your API key is stored in the system Keychain, encrypted by iOS/macOS, and is never transmitted anywhere except to the provider you configured it for. Use of a third-party provider is subject to that provider's own privacy policy.
Downloadable course packs are fetched from Chatwise's content catalog over HTTPS. These downloads are anonymous — no account, device identifier, or personal data is attached to the request.
If you use voice input, audio is processed using Apple's on-device Speech framework to transcribe your words to text. Chatwise does not record, store, or transmit raw audio.
All network traffic uses HTTPS/TLS. Downloadable course content is additionally encrypted with AES-256-GCM via Apple's CryptoKit. Chatwise does not implement or ship any custom cryptography.
Chatwise does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the app stores data locally and in the user's own iCloud account rather than on a Chatwise server, Chatwise itself never receives this information regardless of the user's age.
You can delete any chat, deck, card, test, or course at any time from within the app — this removes it locally and, if iCloud sync is enabled, from your iCloud account. Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data.
